The 2000 Champions, 12 years on

The 100th Davis Cup Final produced many memorable moments - both on and off the court. For the Czechs a heroic performance from Radek Stepanek ensured the 2012 team would join the 1980 champions, who had the legendary Ivan Lendl at the helm, in becoming just the second Czech team to lift Dwight Davis’s silver trophy. On the Spanish side, one of the most emotional moments came when the whole team who won the first Davis Cup for Spain in 2000 met up at the official dinner which closes the final.

Destiny decided that, through different mediums, all four players from that legendary team which overcame Australia in the Palau Sant Jordi in 2000 would reunite in Prague 12 years later. Alex Corretja travelled there as captain, Albert Costa as technical director of the Spanish Tennis Federation, Juan Carlos Ferrero was present offering his support and experience after his recent retirement, and Joan Balcells was contributing to the Spanish Davis Cup Radio.

The photo was greatly sought after throughout the week but due to the various commitments of each member of the team, they were forced to continually reschedule. Finally, once the curtain was about to close on the 100th Final, the four posed with the cup on which their names have been engraved.

The Spanish team could not lift the cup in 2012 but continue to dominate the competition in the new millennium with five titles (2000, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011). Corretja, Costa, Ferrero and Balcells were the catalyst for this incredible run of triumphs when they won that final and such strength in depth in Spain surely means there are plenty more to come.
