USA travels to Chile with an unbeaten record against the hosts, having won all four previous meetings. The most recent clash was in the World Group quarterfinals in 2006, when the Americans recorded a 3-2 win at home.
Chile endured a mixed campaign in 2010. After defeating Israel 4-1 in the World Group first round, and with Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu back playing well, Hans Gildemeister’s team looked like it could mount a serious challenge.
However, Gonzalez was sidelined through injury for the quarterfinals and an under-strength Czech Republic team brought a premature end to Chile’s run, winning 4-1 in Coquimbo.
USA is making its second consecutive visit to South America, having booked its place in the elite 16 for the 23rd straight year by overcoming Colombia 3-1 in the World Group play-offs.
Mardy Fish was the hero in the Battle of Bogota, as he became the first American since Pete Sampras in 1995 to win all three of his rubbers. The tie was also significant for the end of Patrick McEnroe’s ten-year reign as captain.
