Ecuador and Mexico will try to avoid relegation to Group II in this Group I playoff that will be held in Guayaquil. The Ecuadorians beat the Mexicans in the only previous occasion that these two teams met in the competition in 2005.
Ecuador has been very close to earning a World Group Playoff spot but it will now battle to stay in Group I. The Ecuadorians gained an early 2-0 lead against Canada that put them only one point away from the playoffs. However, the Canadians reacted and won all the remaining matches without dropping a set and send Ecuador to the first round of the Group I relegation.
Mexico also lost to Canada in the previous round. The Canadians travelled to Mexico with their No. 1 player, Milos Raonic, who won his two singles rubbers and also the doubles in partnership with Vasek Pospisil.
Ecuador reached the World Group in 2010 and was very close to access the playoffs again this year while the Mexicans have not reached the WG since 1997.
