This tie, which sees Argentina and Kazakhstan meeting for the first time, is starting a day earlier than originally scheduled because of government elections taking place in Argentina on 10 July.
The Argentine team swept past Romania 4-1 to seal its place in the quarterfinals for the 10th straight year. David Nalbandian and Juan Monaco won their opening singles rubbers before Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank maintained Argentina’s record of reaching the last eight every since being promoted to the World Group in 2002.
Kazakhstan proved to be the surprise package of the first round by stunning last year’s semifinalists Czech Republic in a decisive fifth rubber in Ostrava. Mikhail Kukushkin was the hero of the hour after his compatriot Andrey Golubev had defied the odds to defeat Czech No. 1 Tomas Berdych.
The Kazakhs are making their debut in the World Group, while Argentina is looking for its maiden title having finished runner-up in 1981, 2006 and 2008.
