  • Tie Summary

This will be the only 100% Asian tie of these Davis Cup World Group playoffs. These two old rivals have met each other 21 times in Davis Cup resulting in 18 victories for India and 3 for Japan.

Japan beat Uzbekistan in Kobe, Japan. The Uzbeks’ number one player Denis Istomin took the first point for his country. However, that would be the only point that the Uzbeks would get in the tie and Japan secured a place in the World Group playoffs with an overall score of 4-1.

India was defeated in the first round of the World Group for the second consecutive year after suffering a 4-1 loss against reigning champions Serbia in the World Group first round in Novi Sad. With the score level after day one, Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic claimed a hard fought doubles win, paving the way for Viktor Troicki to seal the Serbians a place in the next round.

India have played in the World Group over the last two years but have failed to go beyond the first round in both occasions. Japan was an inaugural member of the World Group in 1981, and also competed in the top tier in 1985 but has failed to return since then.
