Austria and Belgium have met in four different occasions in the competition; the Austrians lead the head-to-head series between the two nations 4-0.
Belgium played a very powerful Spanish team in the first round of the World Group in Charleroi. Rafael Nadal and Fernando Verdasco won the singles rubbers on the opening day, before Verdasco teamed up with Feliciano Lopez to seal victory for Spain. The early elimination meant that the Belgians will need to compete in the playoffs in order to retain their place among the top tier teams.
Austria lost 3-2 against France in an exciting World Group first round clash, played at a make-shift stadium inside a Vienna airport hangar. Jeremy Chardy proved to be the hero of the tie for the visitors, as he first upset world No. 10 Jurgen Melzer on day one before defeating Martin Fischer in the deciding fifth rubber.
The Austrians have only missed the World Group once since 2003 but have been unable to go beyond the first round. The Belgians have been relegated from WG to Group I in five different occasions since 2000 but managed to reach the World Group quarterfinals in 2007.
