This will be the 11th meeting between Czech Republic and Serbia with both sides having won five of the previous ties although all but the most recent of these were played under the flags of Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia. The last meeting, a semifinal in 2010, went right to the wire with Novak Djokovic and Janko Tipsarevic pulling Serbia back from a 2-1 deficit on the final day.
In contrast to a first round loss at home to Kazakhstan in 2011, Czech Republic reached the quarterfinals this year with a resounding win at the same venue in Ostrava against Italy. The Czech duo of Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek wrapped up the three points needed for victory on the first two days of competition.
Serbia has emerged as a real force in Davis Cup in recent years, winning the competition in 2010 and making the semifinal last season. They will, however, be looking to improve on their recent doubles results having won just three of the last eight. This was further the case in the first round against Sweden when Nenad Zimonjic and Janko Tipsarevic were edged out 108 in the fifth set accounting for the teams only dropped point in the tie.
