  • Tie Summary

Japan and Israel are meeting each other for the first time in this World Group play-off tie. Japan are hosting the tie at the Ariake Coliseum, the site of their victory at the same stage of the competition last year against India after a ten year absence from the Tokyo venue.

Japan made an appearance in the World Group in 2012 after a 26 year absence and will now be looking to ensure that they do not make an immediate return to the zone groups. They find themselves in the play-offs having lost out to Croatia in the first round when Ivo Karlovic defeat Go Soeda in the decisive fifth rubber.

Their opponents, Israel, are bidding to gain promotion to return to the World Group having been relegated in 2010. Having been awarded a bye in Europe/Africa Zone Group I first round they faced Portugal for the right to play in this match, scoring a 3-2 victory.
