USA and Brazil have met on four previous occasions in Davis Cup with the latter managing to post just a single victory against their opponents. That success came in 1966 and there has been just a single meeting since when current Captain Jim Courier led the USA to victory some 13 years ago.
The Americans may be the most successful country in the history of Davis Cup but they have not reached the Final since 2007 and that run was extended when they were defeated at the hands of Spain in last year’s semifinal. Impressive away victories against Switzerland and France on clay was halted in Gijon despite a number of spirited performances.
Brazil finally made it to the World Group having suffered defeat in the play-offs for six straight years prior to victory against Russia in September. Having lost to the same opponent at that stage the year previous, this time on home soil the Brazilians swept aside the competition to record a 5-0 victory in front of local hero Gustavo Kuerten.
