Argentina hold a somewhat surprising 6-2 lead in the overall head-to-head against Germany with four of those victories coming within a decade from 1981, three being by a 3-2 scoreline. They also met at the same stage of the competition last year when Juan Monaco and David Nalbandian led the Argentinean team to a 4-1 victory.
The hosts have reached at least the quarterfinal stage in each of the last 11 years, during which they have also appeared in three Finals all of which they lost. Tomas Berdych proved their undoing in the last match against Czech Republic as he played a part in all three points. Juan Martin Del Potro was able to give the hosts a lead but injury kept him from returning to help the side.
Germany recovered from their first round defeat at the hands of Argentina to defeat Australia in the play-offs. Despite trailing 2-1 going into the final day of the tie Florian Mayer and Cedrik-Marcel Stebe scored victories over Bernard Tomic and Lleyton Hewitt respectively to maintain their place in the elite.
