Uruguay and Dominican Republic have met on four previous occasions and are tied at two wins apiece. Uruguay, however, have won both of the last two meetings with some ease in 2005 and 2010.
Uruguay lost in the Americas Zone Group I semifinals for the third straight year in 2012. Having beaten Peru in the first round they came up against a Chile side that proved too strong for them and although Marcel Fouder was able to give them the lead Paul Capdeville won both his singles and teamed with Jorge Aguilar to thwart the hosts efforts.
Dominican Republic are making just their second appearance in Americas Zone Group I having lost both their ties at this level in 2010, including a first round loss to Uruguay. They won promotion thanks to a 3-2 victory against Mexico with two singles victories from Victor Estrella and another by Jose Hernandez.
