  • Tie Summary

    Ecuador host Chile knowing that all five previous meetings between the nations have been won by the home side. Chile took the last victory to take the lead in the head-to-head back in 2004 when they scored a 5-0 win in Vina del Mar thanks to Nicolas Massu and Fernando Gonzalez.

    Ecuador saved themselves from relegation in their last tie with victory against Peru, the second year in a row they have been in the relegation play-offs. They have not won ain Americas Zone Group I first round action since 2009 having made a brief appearance in the World Group in 2010.

    Chile lost in the World Group play-offs for a second consecutive year against Italy, winning just a single rubber on each occasion. They were looking for an immediate return to the elite group and earned the right at the attempt having beaten Uruguay 3-1.
