Venezuela enter their home tie against Guatemala having won both their previous meetings. The most recent of these was a 5-0 whitewash in Guatemala City in 2001 at the semifinal stage of Americas Zone Group II.
Venezuela were beaten at the semifinal stage of the competition for the second straight year last season. They scored a convincing victory against Puerto Rico but then came undone against Dominican Republic in the following round as Victor and Henry Estrella combined for all the key rubbers in a 3-1 victory.
Guatemala achieved promotion to Americas Zone Group II with a victory against Costa Rica having finished top of their group in the round-robin phase of the competition held in Trinidad and Tobago. Christopher Diaz-Figueroa was the star performer of the week for Guatemala with five victories in singles and another in doubles to maintain a perfect record through the competition.
