Poland and Slovenia have met on two previous occasions and both ties have gone down to the wire with the victor decided in the final rubber. Poland won the most recent tie away in Portoroz in 2004 when both nations were in Europe/Africa Zone Group II.
Poland won all three of their matches in 2012 to gain promotion from Europe/Africa Zone Group II with victories against Madagascar, Estonia and Belarus. Those results mean that the Polish will have the opportunity to record a first victory in Group I since 1991 having lost four consecutive first round ties prior to relegation in 2011.
Slovenia have won in the first round in Group I in each of the last two years but both times fallen short of a place in the World Group play-offs. Blaz Kavcic got Slovenia off to a good start against South Africa in their last match but they then failed to capitalise and lost 4-1.
