Ukraine host Slovak Republic with the visitors having won the only previous meeting between the two nations when they met in Bratislava in a Europe/Africa Zone Group I relegation play-off in 2011. Ukraine won just a single rubber in the tie thanks to Sergei Stakhovsky with Martin Klizan winning both his rubbers for Slovak Republic.
Ukraine are returning to Group I having spent just a single year in Europe/Africa Zone Group II. Having beaten Monaco and Cyprus without losing a single rubber they then had to work hard to earn promotion against Latvia as Illya Marchenko beat Andis Juska in the deciding rubber to secure their return.
Slovak Republic were forced to fight for their place in Group I having lost to Great Britain in the first round. In the relegation play-off they met stiff resistance from Portugal but eventually prevailed 3-1 once again thanks to two victories from Klizan.
