Romania and Netherlands meet in the second round stage of Group I for the second consecutive year. Last year Netherlands hosted and whitewashed Romania 5-0 to earn a place in the World Group play-offs. Overall this is the sixth meeting between the two nations.
This is the first time Romania has been out of the World Group for consecutive years since 2000. Before last year they contested six World Group play-offs in a row and then by losing to Netherlands they missed out on a seventh, thereby having to spend another year in Group I. They had a confident start to this year by defeating Denmark 5-0 in the opening round.
Netherlands had a first round bye this year. In their last appearance in Davis Cup in September, they earned their first World Group play-off in three years but fell to a Roger Federer-led Switzerland 3-2 in Amsterdam. Netherlands has been in Group I for five of the past six years. From 1990-2006, Netherlands had been an almost permanent presence in the World Group.
If Romania wins this tie, Netherlands will play Denmark in the 1st Round play-off on 13-15 September. The loser of that tie will play the 2nd Round play-off on 18-20 October. If Netherlands wins, Denmark must wait for other results in Zone Group I before finding out its next opponent.
