Slovak Republic host Sweden in a Europe/Africa Zone Group I 1st Round play-off. Both of these nations are in the play-off having suffered 3-2 defeats at the hands of Ukraine. The nations are tied at 1-1 in head-to-heads, with Slovak Republic winning their most recent clash in 1999.

Slovak Republic lost a 2-1 lead in the 1st Round in February as Ukraine fought back on the final day to secure victory.

Sweden also surrendered a 2-1 lead in the 2nd Round, losing both of the reverse singles rubbers to set up an enticing clash with Slovak Republic.
