  • Tie Summary

An eighth meeting between these two nations in a series dating back to 1953. This is their first meeting since 2006; Finland leads Ireland 4-3 and has won their last two meetings.

Hosts Ireland are into the second round of Group II for the first time in three years. For the last two years they lost their opening round tie to Luxembourg and then Hungary which meant they had to save their Group II status in relegation play-offs. Their fortunes changed this year when they beat Estonia in a decisive fifth rubber in Dublin.

Finland on the other hand are looking for immediate return to Group I. Having returned to Group I three years ago, they dropped back again this year after losing all of their 2012 ties, to Netherlands, Romania and Denmark. Their campaign this year began against Bulgaria whom they also defeated in a decisive fifth rubber in Sofia.
