Portugal and Lithuania meet for the first time in Davis Cup. Portugal was relegated to Group II for 2013 while Lithuania was promoted from Group III.

Portugal spent the last two years in Group I but lost its status when beaten by Slovak Republic in last September’s play-offs. But it made a comfortable start to its campaign in February by defeating Benin 5-0.

Lithuania dropped to Group III for 2012 but won all three of its ties to return to Group II for 2013. In this year’s opening round they defeated Cyprus 4-1, with team leader Ricardas Berankis scoring his second singles win of the weekend to secure overall victory. They are bidding to match their best Davis Cup result by reaching the final round of Group II.
