Moldova host Portugal in this Europe/Africa Zone Group II third round tie, with the winners gaining promotion to Zone Group I for next year. This will be the first meeting between the two sides.

Moldova are in the third round courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Bosnia/Herzegovina. In a closely contested tie, Radu Albot fought back from two sets down to win a dramatic rubber 67(4) 46 64 63 63 in the first of the reverse singles to give Moldova the victory.

Portugal have been in scintillating form in this year's Davis Cup and have not dropped a rubber so far. In their second round match, they comfortably defeated Lithuania without dropping a single set. Portugal have featured six players so far in this year's competition, however, Rui Machado and Pedro Sousa have been the most active, playing three rubbers each.
