Bulgaria and Estonia meet for the second time in Davis Cup history. Their lone meeting in 1997 was won 3-0 by Bulgaria – at the same site at which this tie is being held, the Lokomotiv TC in Plovdiv.
Having returned to Group II for 2013, Bulgaria suffered defeat at the hands of Finland in a deciding fifth rubber with their only victor of the weekend being team No. 1 Grigor Dimitrov who won both his singles rubbers. This is only the seventh time in history that Bulgaria has had to face the relegation play-off and it’s been unsuccessful in its last three in 2000, 2007 and 2011.
Estonia is hoping to avoid a return to Group III, where it last appeared in 2009. Estonia suffered a similar fate to Bulgaria in February, with Vladimir Ivanov keeping the tie alive with his two singles wins to force a decisive fifth, but Davis Cup debutant Marek Marksoo unable to seal victory.
