Great Britain advanced to the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group quarterfinals for the first time since 1986, with an impressive victory over the American team at Petco Park in San Diego.
Andy Murray began the British campaign with a routine victory over Donald Young, who was standing in for American No. 1 John Isner. The highlight of the tie was, however, the second rubber between Sam Querrey and James Ward, which Ward won in five sets to leave Great Britain on the cusp of victory. The Bryan brothers maintained their outstanding Davis Cup record by defeating Colin Fleming and Dominic Inglot, but Murray ensured that Great Britain would see quarterfinal action with a four set win against Querrey in the reverse singles.
