Croatia were buoyed by the appearance of US open champion Marin Cilic as they won a thrilling tie against Netherlands 3-2 to move to the World Group for 2015.
Cilic did not feature on the first day but Mate Delic stepped up fro Croatia, defeating Igor Sijsling 46 64 75 62 in the opening rubber. Robin Haase then levelled the tie with a 76(4) 61 64 win over Borna Coric. Cilic arrived for the doubles and had an instant impact as he and Marin Draganja defeated Haase and Jean-Julien Rojer 62 36 63 64 to hand Croatia a 2-1 lead.
Haase forced the tie into a deciding fifth rubber when he emerged victorious in a thrilling match against Delic, fighting back from two sets to love down to win 36 46 64 61 64. Cilic took on Thiemo de Bakker in the crucial final rubber and, although de Bakker won the opening set on a tiebreak, Cilic proved too strong, earning a 67(4) 64 62 75 win to book Croatia's place among the elite for next year.
