Group IIAsia/Oceania1st Round
Thailand host Hong Kong in Nonthaburi in the first round of the 2014 competition. This will be the teams' first meeting since 1997, but it is Thailand who have the superior head-to-head record, with four victories in five ties.
Following a relatively comfortable win over Kuwait in their first fixture of 2013, Thailand suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of the Philippines in the Zone Group II semifinal. After finishing the first day of the day with one win apiece, the Philippines won both the third and fourth rubbers in straight sets, meaning that Thailand will compete in Group II for the fifth consecutive year.
Hong Kong bounced straight back following relegation in 2012. Victories over Oman, Malaysia and Iran sent Hong Kong through to the Zone Group III promotion play-offs, where a 2-1 victory against Cambodia was enough to secure a return to Zone Group II.
