Ukraine matched its best ever Davis Cup performance by defeating Sweden and advancing to the World Group play-offs for only the third time. Johan Brunstrom, a doubles specialist without a singles ranking, was brought in to play the opening rubber against Sergiy Stakhovsky after Isak Arvidsson suffered an injury in practice. The veteran Swede performed above all expectations, taking Stakhovsky to five sets, which the Ukrainian finally edged by a remarkable scoreline of 1311. The second singles match could not compete in terms of excitement, but was crucial to the result as Artem Smirnov beat Markus Eriksson in straight sets. The doubles rubber was another classic as Sergei Bubka and Denis Molchanov pushed Brunstrom and Robert Lindstedt all the way, the Swedes eventually winning 108 in the fifth set. Stakhovsky ensured that there would be no miraculous Swedish comeback in the reverse singles on Sunday, as he defeated Eriksson in straight sets.
