  • Tie Summary

After years of struggling even to stay in Zone Group I, Slovak Republic advanced to a World Group play-off tie in September at the expense of an Austrian team that clearly missed the presence of Jurgen Melzer, who was absent for the first time in over ten years. Norbert Gombos, making his Davis Cup debut, defeated Dominic Thiem in four sets before Andreas Haider-Maurer surrendered a two sets to one lead in losing to Lukas Lacko. Thiem, playing in the doubles with Alexander Peya, came very close to hauling the Austrians back into the tie, but a third set tie-break proved crucial as the Slovak pair of Martin Klizan and Michal Mertinak fought back to claim a five set win, and give the Slovaks a chance at returning to the Davis Cup elite in 2015.
