Romania will play host to Sweden in this first round play-off tie, with the losers scheduled to meet either Latvia or Austria at the end of October. The Swedes have been victorious both times that these nations have met in the past, including a World Group play-off tie in 2009.
Both of these teams have suffered defeat at the hands of Ukraine in the 2014 competition. In the first round, Romania's Marius Copil and Horia Tecau won the doubles rubber but the team could not record a singles success, losing the tie 3-1. After a bye in the first round, Sweden faced the Ukrainians in the second round; Johan Brunstrom was involved in two incredible five set matches, the doubles specialist going down 1311 to Sergiy Stakhovsky in the final set of the opening rubber, before combining with Robert Lindstedt to win 108 in the final set of the doubles. Ultimately though, Sweden were also unable to win a singles rubber, and lost the tie 4-1.
