Egypt must travel to Moldova on their return to Zone Group II in 2014. The nations have met just once before, in Cairo in 2002. Egypt were comfortable victors on that occasion, winning 5-0.
The Moldovans will be looking to build on a successful 2013 season, that saw them narrowly miss out on promotion to Zone Group I. After wins against Hungary and Bosnia/Herzegovina, Radu Albot's two battling singles victories against Portugal took the tie down to the final rubber. Maxim Dubarenko was unable to overcome Rui Machado, losing in straight sets, meaning that Moldova will compete in Group II for the third consecutive year.
Following relegation in 2012, Egypt responded in the best possible way, winning all of their matches in 2013 to earn promotion back to Group II. A trio of wins against Nigeria, Botswana and Zambia set up a promotion play-off against Zimbabwe, in which, despite a singles loss for Mohamed Safwat, the Egyptians came out on top.
