Victor Estrella was the star player for the Dominican Republic as he won his reverse singles rubber against Federico Zebellos of Bolivia 62 62 62 on Sunday to set up a meeting with Venezuela in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group II second round.

Having already won his first singles rubber and then given the Dominicans the edge by winning the doubles with Jose Hernandez, Estrella again proved why he is regarded as a Dominican tennis legend. Ricardo Cid completed the tie defeating Bolivian Carlos Taborga 64 62 in the fifth rubber.

However, with most of the ties having already been decided, Sunday was more about whether or not the fans would witness a whitewash.

Paraguayans Daniel-Alejandro Lopez Cassaccia and Jose Benitez fought back to restore some pride against Barbados, who recorded the upset of the round, but, having already been 3-0 down, their victories were, ultimately, in vain .

Venezuela completed a 5-0 whitewash over Puerto Rico. Ricardo Rodriguez got the hosts off to a flyer by defeating Jose Pedromo 63 62. This paved the way for Enrique Olivares who duly delivered, beating Gabriel Flores Ruiz 62 76(8). This is Venezuela’s first whitewash in Americas Zone Group II since defeating Guatemala 5-0 in 2001.

Mexico moved 4-0 up in their tie with El Salvador as Daniel Garza defeated Marcelo Arevalo 64 26 63. The fifth rubber saw Mexican Manuel Sanchez taking on Andres Weisskopf of El Salvador. It was Sanchez who came out on top and confirmed the whitewash by winning 61 61.
