Christopher Rungkat sealed Indonesia’s place in the second round of Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Asia/Oceania Zone Group II with a convincing victory over Hiu-Tung Yu in Hong Kong on Sunday.

With the visitors leading 2-1 overnight, Rungkat, ranked at No. 407, had the opportunity to clinch an unassailable lead for Indonesia in the first of the reverse singles rubbers and he duly obliged, winning 63 76(7) 62 in 2 hours 17 minutes.

It was Rungkat’s third straight sets victory of the weekend after he won his opening singles on Friday, beating Nicholas Sayer, before successfully teaming up with David Agung Susanto to prevail in the doubles on Saturday.

Sayer salvaged some pride for Hong Kong in the final rubber by defeating Aditya Hari Sasongko 62 63, but the damage had already been done. Indonesia march on to host Thailand in April’s second round, while Hong Kong will also be at home against Sri Lanka as they bid to avoid relegation.

The tie between Thailand and Sri Lanka in Colombo ended as a contest on Saturday when the visitors took a 3-0 lead, but Sri Lanka reduced the deficit to 3-2 on Sunday by claiming the two dead rubbers, the first courtesy of a retirement and the second due to a walkover as the Thai team nursed a number of injuries.

At the University of St Anthony in Camarines Sur, Philippines continued their domination over Pacific Oceania by steam-rolling their lower ranked opponents 5-0. The hosts showed no sign of taking their foot off the gas with their top two players, Jeson Patrombon and Johnny Arcilla, recording routine singles wins over Aymeric Mara and Cyrile Jacob respectively.

Philippines and Pacific Oceania must both wait to discover their next opponent, with the tie between Lebanon and Pakistan in Jounieh a day behind schedule after heavy rain caused a wash-out on Friday. The opening singles rubbers were split, but Pakistan's Aisam Qureshi and Aqeel Khan won the doubles to edge ahead. The tie is scheduled for completion on Monday.
