DOHA, QATAR: The first day of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Group IV Round Robin has been completed at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex in Doha, Qatar.
Pool A has seen a very one-sided day with comprehensive victories from Saudi Arabia and Turkmenistan over Iraq and Bahrain respectively.
Although Turkmenistan did not drop a single set in its tie against Bahrein, all the matches were closely contested. Turkmenistan’s Eziz Davletov GOT off to a good start against Yusuf Qaed 63 62 and Aleksandr Ernepesov claimed an unreachable lead for the Central Asians with a 64 62 win against Bahrain’s Hasan Abdul-Nabi. The doubles meant the third point for Turkmenistan with Eziz Davletov an Jamshid Ilmuradov claiming a 62 62 victory.
Saudi Arabia earned a very clear win against Iraq. The Saudi team only dropped 7 games in their matches thank to three victories from Fahad Al Asaad against Ali Khairi Hashim Al Mayahi 60 61, Omar Al Thagib 64 60 over Ahmed Hamzah Abdulhasan and the doubles pair Zaki Al Abdullah/ Omar Al Thagib over Ahmed Hamzah Abdulhasan/Ali Khairi Hashim Al Mayahi 60 62.
In Pool B the ties have been more tightly contested with the hosts Qatar earning a very tough win against Myanmar in a deciding doubles match that had two tie-breaks 76(3) 76(4).
The opening matches were easier for Cambodia that did not drop a set in their victory over Singapore. However, Singapore showed that they are a motivated rival and forced a tie-break in the last point, when all was already decided. The doubles match ended with a score of 67(8) 36 for the Cambodian pair Kenny Bum/Pannhara Mam.
