Guatemala and Costa Rica are in pole position at the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group III event after maintaining their 100 per cent record on Thursday with wins over Honduras and Panama respectively.

Guatemala, who sit at the top of Pool A with three wins out of three, have already secured their place in the promotion play-offs on Saturday. Their final tie of the group stage is against win-less Aruba on Friday.

Julen Uriguen got Guatemala off to a quick start against Honduras as he overcame a spirited second set performance to beat Keny Turcios 60 75. Christopher Diaz-Figueroa then sealed the tie by defeating Alejandro Obando 61 62.

Guatemala, who are bidding for a return to Group II after a two-year absence, brought in Wilfredo Gonzalez and Sebastien Vidal for the doubles rubber and the pair delivered a 61 62 victory over Marco Osorio and Ricardo Pineda in just 52 minutes.

In the other Pool A tie, Trinidad & Tobago’s hopes of reaching the play-offs ended as they slipped to a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Haiti in front of their home fans at the Shaw Park Tennis Centre in Tobago.

Haiti dropped just 13 games all day on their way to a comprehensive win. Gonzales Austin opened with a 63 64 triumph against Yohansey Williams, before Olivier Sajous hammered Vaughn Wilson 61 62. Sajous then successfully teamed up with Joel Allen on the doubles court to cap an excellent team performance.

The result means that Haiti, who play Honduras on Friday, join Guatemala in progressing through the round-robin group. The format for the knock-out stage sees the winners of Pool A play the runners-up of Pool B, and vice versa, with the two winning nations gaining promotion to Group II in 2013.

With one more day to go in the group stage, Pool B is more intriguing with the play-off spots still to be decided. Costa Rica are top of the table on three wins, closely followed by Bahamas and Jamaica on two wins. On Friday, Costa Rica take on Bahamas and Jamaica face Panama.

Thursday’s action saw Costa Rica record a 3-0 victory over Panama, with all four Costa Rican players getting their name on the scoresheet. Pablo Nunez and Ignaci Roca claimed straight set singles wins, before Maurizio Feoli and Alan Reifer won the doubles rubber in three sets.

Jamaica also triumphed 3-0 as they heaped more misery on the US Virgin Islands team, who have lost all four of their ties this week without winning a rubber. Dominic Pagon and Brandon Burke won the singles matches, then Dominic and Dwayne Pagon combined to prevail in the doubles rubber.
