Clement succeeds Forget as French captain

NEWS ARTICLE

Clement takes over from Forget

Arnaud Clement has taken over from Guy Forget as France’s new Davis Cup captain, the French Tennis Federation announced on Friday.

Clement, 34, made his Davis Cup debut in 2000 and went on to play 18 ties over a 10-year spell. His last appearance was during France’s defeat to Serbia at the 2010 Final in Belgrade.

The Frenchman was instrumental in his country’s title-winning campaign of 2001. He didn’t appear in the Final against Australia, but he played singles in the opening three rounds with four wins and two losses to his name.

Overall, Clement finished his Davis Cup career with a 20-11 win-loss record, broken down as 12-9 in singles and 8-2 in doubles. Among his scalps in the competition have been Marc Rosset, Andy Roddick and Ivan Ljubicic, as well as Bob and Mike Bryan on the doubles court.

Clement is best remembered in recent times as a doubles specialist, having won the Wimbledon title in 2007 and reached the Australian Open final in 2008, both with Michael Llodra, but he was also an accomplished singles player.

A former Top 10 player, Clement finished runner-up at the Australian Open in 2001 and was a quarterfinalist at the US Open and Wimbledon. He finished his career with four singles and 12 doubles titles.

Forget had been French captain since 1999 and guided the team to victory in 2001. Long before he actually stepped down, he had already announced that this would be his final season in charge. His last tie came in April when France lost to USA in the World Group quarterfinals.

Clement’s maiden tie as captain will be the World Group first round in 2013. The draw for next year’s competition is taking place in London on 19 September.
