There are four Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Zone Group I ties taking place this weekend with the teams fighting to avoid relegation for the 2013 season. See below for updates from each tie.

India 5-0 New Zealand

- Zone: Asia/Oceania
- Venue: CLTA Tennis Stadium
- Location: Chandigarh, India
- Surface: Outdoor hard

The tie in Chandigarh had already been decided before a ball was even hit today after India moved into an unassailable 3-0 lead on Saturday, but that didn't stop the hosts continuing to turn the screw over a hapless New Zealand team.

Having come from two sets to win on Friday, Yuki Bhambri added to his growing Davis Cup reputation as the comeback kid by fighting from a set down to defeat Kiwi No. 1 Jose Statham 26 75 76(5).

That result put India 4-0 up and Sanam Singh sealed a whitewash victory by easing past Artem Sitak 64 61 in the fifth rubber, capping an excellent weekend for India, who were without the services of a number of their high profile players.

India have now retained their place in Asia/Oceania Zone Group I for another season, while New Zealand will travel to Chinese Taipei on 19-21 October in a fight against relegation to Group II.

Slovak Republic 3-1 Portugal

- Zone: Europe/Africa
- Venue: Aegon Arena
- Location: Bratislava, Slovak Republic
- Surface: Indoor hard

Portugal have been relegated from the Davis Cup Europe/Africa Zone Group I after Martin Klizan beat Joao Souza 62 75 67(9) 61 to give the Slovak Republic an insurmountable 3-1 lead.

Portugal started the day knowing that they had to win both the reverse singles rubbers if they were to stay in Group I but they did not get off to a good start as Klizan took the first set 6-2. Sousa fought back in the second set but could not prevent the Slovak from taking it 7-5 and moving 2-0 up.

The third set went to a tiebreak and the Portuguese No. 1 prevailed, eventually taking it 11-9. He could not capitalise on taking that set, however, and Klizan made a return to the scintillating form he showed in the first set, taking the fourth set 6-1 and deciding the match.

The fifth rubber was not played.

Romania 3-2 Finland

- Zone: Europe/Africa
- Venue: Sala Sporturilor "Horia Demian" Cluj
- Location: Cluj-Napoca, Romania
- Surface: Indoor hard

In the end it was a decisive fifth rubber that went the distance that proved the difference between these two teams. The hosts clinched the final match and in so doing maintained their place in Zone Group I. For Finland, they have one more chance to stay alive with a second round relegation tie against Denmark in October.

In the first of the reverse singles rubbers it was Jarkko Nieminen, so often the hero for Finland, who forced proceedings into the final rubber after he defeated Marius Copil 63 75 16 76(4).

Enter Victor Crivoi and an unrelenting performance that saw the Romanian come back from two-sets-to-one down to defeat Harri Heliovaara 46 76(5) 67(2) 63 75 in four hours 25 minutes.

Peru 1-3 Ecuador

- Zone: Americas
- Venue: Club Lawn Tennis de la Exposicion
- Location: Lima, Peru
- Surface: Outdoor clay

Ecuador have maintained their status in Americas Zone Group I for 2013 after defeating Peru 3-1 at the Club Lawn Tennis de la Exposicion in Lima.

The visitors clinched the vital third point when Julio Cesar Campozano overcame Duilio Beretta 76(0) 46 57 61 60 in three hours 50 minutes.

Peru have been relegated to Americas Zone Group II as a result of the defeat and were hoping to salvage a consolation point in the dead fifth rubber between Jorge Panta Herreros (PER) and Roberto Quiroz (ECU)
