Guatemala continued its momentum in World Junior Team Competition as its Under 16 boys team flew out of the blocks in their opening match at the Junior Davis Cup by BNP Paribas North/Central American & Caribbean Pre-Qualifying event in La Libertad, El Salvador.
The Guatemalan boys’ team defeated Bermuda for the loss of just three games, winning their two singles encounters and doubles rubber in just three hours and two minutes. The result followed the success of the nation’s Under 14 teams, which dominated last week’s World Junior Tennis pre-qualifying event in both the boys’ and girls’ disciplines.
Seconds seeds Costa Rica, Bahamas and Puerto Rico also pulled off dominant 3-0 wins on the opening day of the competition, which will ultimately decide who goes through to the North/Central American & Caribbean Final Qualifying event in Montreal on May 2-4.
Tighter battles saw Nicaragua narrowly defeat Panama and Barbados edge Curacao, with both contests decided in the third rubber. Hosts El Salvador battled hard to do the country proud on the first day, coming back from 1-0 down to defeat Honduras thanks to a strong performance from Atilio Flores. The youngster toiled for over three hours to defeat Andres Argenal 75 57 60 in the second rubber before teaming with Ernesto Telles to clinch the tie in the doubles.
