Japan look on course for a return to the World Group play-offs after wins over Korea Rep to lead 2-0 in their tie in Tokyo. It was a climactic end to the day with world No. 86 Go Soeda producing a comeback from 0-2 down to beat Cho Min Hyeok. It was the second 0-2 comeback of Soeda’s career having also done the same in last year’s Davis Cup first round against Croatia.
Also battling for a place in the World Group play-offs are Uzbekistan and Australia who are tied 1-1 at the end of play in Namangan. Both No. 1s Bernard Tomic and Denis Istomin did what was expected of them and won their matches over the team No. 2s. Farrukh Dustov and Istomin will be back on court tomorrow for the doubles, while Australia will field a fresh pairing, Lleyton Hewitt and Matthew Ebden.
Over at the other end of Asia/Oceania Group I, China leads Chinese Taipei 2-0 after Wu Di and Zhang Ze secured expected victories in front of their home crowd over lower-ranked opponents Chen Ti and Yang Tsung-Hua respectively.
And India are in a similar situation leading Indonesia 2-0 after Somdev Devvarman secured an easy straight sets win in the opening rubber, and Yuki Bhambri got the better of Indonesian No. 1 Christopher Rungkat 63 62 62 in the second.
Whoever wins these two ties will secure their Group I status for 2014, while the losers will have to play a final relegation play-off round in September.
