Philippines put one foot in the Asia/Oceania Group II third round after Francis Casey Alcantara and Treat Huey clinched Saturday’s doubles rubber for the hosts to earn a 2-1 advantage over Thailand going into the final day.

The more experienced pair saw off Nuttanon Kadchapanan and 17-year-old Pruchya Isarow 63 63 76(4) to ensure a very interesting final day of action at the Plantation Bay Resort & Spa in Lapu City.

Ruben Gonzales has the chance to win the tie for Philippines in the fourth rubber on Sunday, but he faces world No. 207 Danai Udomchoke, a Davis Cup commitment award winner and by far the highest ranked player in the tie at No. 207 in the world.

Udomchoke has already drawn Thailand level once, defeating Johnny Arcilla in the second rubber, and he’ll be favoured to do so again on Sunday against Gonzales, ranked 577 places below him.

That could leave Arcilla going head-to-head with Wishya Trongcharoenchaikul, who turns 18 on Monday, in the decisive fifth rubber. The prize on offer to the winner is a place in the Group II third round in September against New Zealand, who were handed victory over Pakistan on Friday as result of an unplayable court in Mayanmar. A place in Group I is at stake to the victorious nation.

Sri Lanka and Kuwait put themselves in strong positions to remain in Group II after going 2-1 up against Lebanon and Syria respectively in the Asia/Oceania Group II relegation play-offs.

Hassan Al Mousa and Mohammad Ghareeb dropped just five games to win the doubles for Kuwait, while Harshana Godamanna and Rajeev Rajapakse came through a tough four-setter to give Sri Lanka the advantage going into Sunday’s reverse singles.
