Juan-Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah teamed to secure the vital third point for Colombia in their tie against Uruguay which booked them a place in the World Group play-offs for the first time since 2010.
Santiago Giraldo and Alejandro Falla had set up the victory with singles victories on the first day but Cabal and Farah had anything but a straight forward encounter with Arial Behar and Marcel Felder but eventually took the win, 64 36 63 57 64 in 3 hours 20 minutes.
In the other tie in Americas Zone Group I, Chile took the lead after Jorge Aguilar and Paul Capdeville defeated Emilio Gomez and Roberto Quiroz of Ecuador in Saturday's doubles 46 76(5) 63 75. Capdeville will return to the court first up on Sunday in the reverse singles with the chance to seal victory having already played a part in both their victories so far this weekend.
