With the victors in each of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group II second round ties decided on Saturday the focus shifted to the relegation play-offs where both Barbados and Guatemala held slim 2-1 leads heading into the final day.
Darian King secured Barbados' future in Group II with a four set victory over Alex Llompart, 57 63 64 63, taking his third point of the weekend and the tie for the hosts. Puerto Rico had fought off relegation in each of the last two years but could not do so a third time and they will now feature in Group III next season.
Guatemala were never placed under any pressure as they won both matches on Sunday to wrap up a 4-1 victory over Haiti. Cristopher Diaz-Figueroa won the important first reverse singles rubber against Oliver Sajous before Luciano Ramazzini added the dead fifth rubber to earn Guatemala a second straight year at this level while Haiti make an immediate return to Group III.
El Salvador and Venezuela had already booked their place in the promotion play-off to be played in September. The nations have met once before in the competition in 2008 when Venezuela came out on top, 4-1.
