World Group play-offs: The Contenders

The draw for the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group play-offs takes place at the ITF headquarters in London at 11am (10am GMT) on Wednesday 10 April.

Here we profile the 16 nations that will be fighting for a place in next year's top tier when the play-offs kick off on September 13-15:

Seeds

1. Spain

First World Group play-off since 2006
- Have competed in the World Group since 1997
- Have only taken part in four World Group play-offs since 1997
- Lost to Canada 3-2 in World Group first round

2. Austria

- Have competed in the World Group play-offs in nine of the last 10 years
- Have won eight and lost one of these nine ties
- In the play-offs after losing 3-1 in the World Group first round to Kazakhstan

3. Croatia

- Have competed in World Group 11 of last 12 years
- Have won four of five World Group play-offs
- Lost 3-2 to Italy in World Group first found

4. Switzerland

- Have been involved in World Group play-offs in each of the last eight years
- Have won six of those eight ties
- Lost 3-2 to Czech Republic in World Group first found in a tie which included the longest rubber in Davis Cup history

5. Germany

- Have been involved in World Group play-offs 15 times
- Have an excellent play-off record, winning 12 of 15 ties
- In the play-offs having lost 5-0 to Argentina in the World Group first round

6. Australia

- Have lost in the World Group play-offs in five of the last six years
- Won their four play-offs prior to that
- Have a 6-6 record in World Group play-offs
- Reached the play-offs following a 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan in the Asia/Oceania Zone Group I second round

7. Belgium

- Have competed in 20 World Group play-offs over the last 23 years
- Have a 12-10 record in World Group play-offs
- In the play-offs following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Serbia in the World Group first round

8. Japan

- Have only ever won one of seven World Group play-offs
- Defeated Korea Rep. 3-2 in Asia/Oceania Zone Group I second round

 


 

Unseeded nations

Brazil

- Have competed in the World Group play-offs in each of the last seven years
- Have won one of last seven play-off ties (last year)
- Lost 3-2 to USA in World Group first round

Colombia

- Only second World Group play-off in nation’s history
- Have never competed in World Group
- Defeated Uruguay 5-0 in Americas Zone Group I second round
- Have never faced any of their potential play-off opponents before

Ecuador

- Have played six World Group matches, winning one
- Have competed in 10 World Group play-offs, winning three
- Defeated Chile 3-2 in Americas Zone Group I second round to reach this year’s play-offs

Great Britain

- Involved in 18 World Group play-offs
- Have a losing record, having only won eight
- Completed first 0-2 comeback since 1930 in Europe/Africa Zone Group I second round v Russia

Israel

- Involved in World Group play-offs in each of the last three years
- Won five-set tie against Japan in Japan last year
- Lost 5-0 to France in World Group

Netherlands

- Won eight consecutive World Group play-offs between 1991 and 2006
- Lost three of four since, including last two
- Defeated Romania 5-0 in Europe/Africa Zone Group I second round to qualify for play-offs

Poland

- First-ever World Group play-off
- Have never competed in World Group
- Defeated South Africa 3-1 in Europe/Africa Zone Group I second round to qualify
- Competed in Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 2012

Ukraine

- Lost their only World Group play-off 3-2 to Belgium in 2009
- Competed in Europe/Africa Zone Group II in 2012
- Defeated Sweden 3-2 in Europe/Africa Zone Group I second round
