David Nalbandian faces a battle to recover in time to compete against Czech Republic in September’s World Group semifinal after undergoing surgery on his right shoulder.
The Argentine, who remains a faithful Davis Cup servant, was operated on by his personal doctor Angel Luis Cotorro in Barcelona on Friday.
“I’m going to work hard every day with my team to recover in time to compete in the doubles against Czech Republic in September,” said the former world No. 3, who also capitalised on his time in surgery to undergo a further operation on his right hip, to be conducted by Mark Philippon.
Nalbandian first noticed that his shoulder was in pain after his doubles victory in the World Group quarterfinal against France and upon further inspection it was deemed necessary to go under the knife.
The doctors have said he will take four months to recover, which means his participation in Martin Jaite’s quartet in Prague is touch and go.
