CHISINAU, MOLDOVA: Julia Helbet and Anastasia Vdovenco led Moldova to an easy whitewash of Kenya on the opening day of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Europe/Africa Zone Group III.
Helbet took one hour and five minutes to defeat Evelyn Otula 61 62 before Vdovenco sealed the win with a 61 64 victory over Caroline Odour in one hour and 14 minutes.
Helbet then teamed up with Gabriela Porubin in the doubles to complete the perfect starts for the hosts with a 60 75 triumph against Odour and Otula.
In Pool D, Liechtenstein proved why they were one of the favourites to earn promotion to Zone Group II next year when they demolished Madagascar.
Kathinka von Deichmann took out Sandra Andriamarosoa 61 61 before Stephanie Vogt lived up to her billing as the best player in the event with a 60 62 victory in just 58 minutes against Nantenaina Ramalalaharivololona.
The same two players from Liechtenstein teamed up to defeat Hariniony Andrimananarivo and Ramalalaharivololona 63 64 to complete another whitewash.
Liechtenstein’s likely Pool D contenders, Norway, started with a victory against Cyprus in the other morning tie at the Terraten Club.
Melanie Stokke defeated Joanna-Nena Savva 63 63 and Hedda Odegaard overcame Mara Argyriou 36 63 75 in the singles rubbers to secure the win for the Norwegians.
The Norwegian duo then proceeded to defeat the Cypriot doubles partnership of Maria Siopacha and Andria Tsaggaridou 75 64 to seal a 3-0 scoreline.
In the afternoon's ties, there were wins for Denmark and Egypt. The Danes defeated Namibia 3-0 and the rubbers included two bagels.
Egypt had secured the victory at the time of writing after singles victories for Sandra Samir and Magy Aziz over Ofelya Poghosyan and Anna Movsisyan respectively.
