Seeds prove too strong on opening day

It was a tale of whitewashes as all five ties were decided 3-0 on the opening day of the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Europe Zone Group III event in San Marino.

Top seeds Greece overcame Montenegro despite a tight second rubber between Alexandros Jakupovic and Ljubomir Celebic that was decided in a third set tiebreak.

Norway, seeded No. 2, dropped 12 games in their victory over Malta in Pool B and No. 3 seeds Georgia looked similarly strong against Armenia in Pool C.

Pool D saw victories for No. 4 seeds Macedonia against Turkey and Albania didn't drop a set in their win against Azerbaijan.
