LA PAZ, BOLIVIA: Honduras landed in an aeroplane and made their way to La Florida, where the Tennis Club La Paz is located, and with just six hours rest and 15 minutes practice on the clay, they overcame Costa Rica 2-1 in an astonishing tie on the second day of Americas Zone Group III.
With this victory, Honduras won their first point to level Costa Rica and Panama at the top of Pool B.
Honduras defeated the favourites 2-1 in an entertaining tie which was clinched in the doubles. In the first singles rubber, Ricardo Pineda of Honduras had his chances to win the first point against Pablo Nunez, but ended up losing a close encounter 57 61 76(6).
Then Keny Turcios levelled proceedings with a confident 63 63 win over Ignaci Roca to force a deciding doubles. Turcios and Pineda came together to stun Costa Rica’s doubles team of Mauricio Feoli and Roca 76(4) 63.
“We weren’t expecting this,” said Turcios, who after winning the final point hugged his partner Pineda and captain Alejandro Obando. “You have to adapt your game [to the altitude] but by the end it didn’t affect us at all. I think the ball floated a bit more but by the end we were playing it well.”
The doubles team made up of Walner Espinoza and John Silva gave the final point to Panama, in a difficult tie against Bermuda, which finished in the third rubber. Panama started the tie well with Espinoza scoring a 67(5) 64 63 win over Gavin Manders, but Naim Azhar put the score at 1-1 after he defeated Jose Gilbert Gomez 76(4) 76(7).
Espinoza and Silva won the tie after defeating John Bascome and Manders 61 67(6) 61 in the doubles.
