The Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Group II got underway this Tuesday at the Maya Country Tennis Club in Santa Tecla (El Salvador). A total of ten teams took part in this opening day of competition.

In Group A, Guatemala faced Honduras in a Central American duel that finished with a clear 3-0 victory for the Guatemalans. The team, captained by Anthony Vasquez, reached the promotion playoffs last year and looked more experienced than a Honduran team that was returning to the competition after a 4-year-absence.

In the other Group A match, Ecuador and Bolivia, two nations with a rich tennis tradition, clashed for a point that could prove crucial for the race to top the Group. The Bolivians were relegated to Group II after a three-year run in Group I and proved to be a tough opponent for Ecuador. However, Domenica Gonzalez Palau got her country to a perfect start by winning the first rubber 76(2) 60 and then partnered with Rafaela Gomez Estrada to give Ecuador the winning point in a close doubles match against Maria Ines Deheza y Noelina Zeballos 16 62 64.

In Group B, Uruguay and hosting nation El Salvador met in another close match that, to the local crowd dismay, did not end up well for the hosts´ interests. Uruguay, in Group II for five years now after their relegation in 2008, won the decisive point after a 1-1 in the singles with a 16 61 64 score thanks to the pair formed by Magdalena Boado y Carolina de los Santos, who also got a point in the first singles match.

The Group B action was completed with two clashes between Caribbean countries, Trinidad & Tobago vs Bahamas and Dominican Republic vs Costa Rica.

In the first match, Trinidad & Tobago and Bahamas competed in a very even tie that went to the doubles wire in which Annaliese Rose and Breana Stamfli, from Bahamas, earned the decisive point 61 64 against Kerrie Cartwright and Simone Pratt.

Finally, the Dominicans defeated comprehensively the Costa Ricans 3-0 and completed a first day marked by the high humidity (89%) of the Salvadorian climate.
