The USTA has announced that the 2014 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group first round clash between USA and Great Britain will take place on outdoor clay at Petco Park in San Diego.

Built in 2004, the venue is home to the San Diego Padres baseball team but will host ‘tennis in the outfield’ on 31 January-2 February in a temporary stadium with a capacity of 8,000.

It’s the first time a Davis Cup tie has been held in an open air stadium in the US - a fitting venue for the renewal of Davis Cup’s oldest rivalry. Great Britain and USA first met in the competition in 1900 and will face off again for the first time since 1999, when Jim Courier defeated Greg Rusedski 8-6 in the fifth and deciding rubber on British soil in the World Group first round.

Great Britain is through to the World Group for the first time since 2008 after Andy Murray led Leon Smith’s men to a 3-1 victory over Croatia in September’s World Group play-off in Umag.

Meanwhile, the National Tennis Centre in Astana has been announced as the venue for the 2014 World Group first round tie between Kazakhstan and Belgium. Belgium survived a World Group play-off encounter against Israel in September and will bid to guarantee its status in the World Group for 2015 with a victory in February’s tie on an indoor hard court in Astana.

Japan will host its 2014 first round tie against this year’s semifinalists Canada on an indoor hard court at the Ariake Coliseum, while Germany hosts Spain on an indoor hard court in Frankfurt.
