The promotion play-offs have been decided after a rain-affected Friday at the Palmas Athletic Club in Humacao.
Dominican Republic will play Bolivia and Chile will take on Costa Rica in Saturday’s promotion play-offs to dictate which two teams earn a place in Americas Zone Group I next year.
Wet weather delayed the start of the third day’s play in Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group II on Friday.
The schedule saw Guatemala against Dominican Republic in Pool A, Chile versus Puerto Rico in Pool B, Peru taking on Bolivia in Pool C and Trinidad & Tobago up against Costa Rica in Pool D.
After the rain came to an end, Guatemala got off to a strong start in the battle of the No. 2s as Andrea-Kirsten Weedon defeated Dominican Republic’s Michelle Valdez 75 62.
For Chile, Andrea Koch overcame a tough opponent in Puerto Rico’s Yolimar Ogando 76(4) 16 62 and, by the same scoreline, Anneliese Rose of Trinidad & Tobago defeated Costa Rica’s Juli Raventos.
The second singles matches saw all four nations level proceedings at 1-1.
Dominican Republic’s Francesca Segarelli made light work of Guatemala’s Camila Ramazzini 60 61, Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig – the highest-ranked player competing – overcame Chile’s Daniela Seguel 61 63, Maria Fernanda Alvarez of Bolivia defeated Peru’s Bianco Botto after the latter retired a set and 1-0 down, and Costa Rica’s Ariana Rahmanparast defeated Olivia Bennett 61 62 to complete a full house of decisive doubles.
Two of the four doubles rubbers went all the way as Chile’s Cecilia Costa and Seguel came from a set down to defeat Puig and Ariana Rodriguez of Puerto Rico 46 64 64.
Costa Rica’s Andrea Brenes and Rahmanparast battled to a 63 36 60 victory over Bennett and Rose of Trinidad & Tobago, while Glenny Cepeda and Segarelli sealed Dominican Republic’s place in the promotion play-offs with a 61 61 win against Guatemala’s Ramazzini and Weedon.
In Pool C, Bolivia’s Alvarez and Ruiz were too good for Botto and Camila Vargas, winning 75 60 in one hour 12 minutes.
