The Argentinean captain, Tito Vazquez, has announced the team that will face Serbia in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas World Group semifinals on 16-18 September. Juan Martin del Potro, David Nalbandian, Juan Monaco and Juan Ignacio Chela will be the players that will travel to Belgrade to fight for a place in the Final.
World No. 76 Nalbandian has missed a big part of the season due to injury but has recovered earlier than expected. The former world No. 3 has entered the draw in Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open, and is working to get his best form back in time for the crucial tie against the current champions.
The only clash between these two nations dates back to 1964, when Serbia was part of Yugoslavia. Therefore, this will be the first time that Serbia meets the Argentines since becoming an independent nation in 2007.
“It will be very difficult; they have the No. 1 player in the world and another two players that have had an unbelievable year like Victor (Troicki) and Janko (Tipsarevic),” said Argentina’s Juan Monaco. “For sure, they are going to be very aggressive playing at home with a lot of support, but we have chances and hopefully we will be able to get something there.”
The tie will be played in the Belgrade Arena, one of the largest indoor venues in Europe with a maximum capacity of up to 20,000, and the atmosphere is expected to be very intense. But the Argentinean team will not be alone, “we have some crazy Argentinean fans that are going to be there and we need them, we feel that passion and we need them,” declared Monaco.
Argentina reached the final in 1981, 2006 and 2008, but is yet to win the Davis Cup. The Argentines, Romania and India are the only countries that have played more than one Final without lifting the trophy.
