Tunisia and Benin strengthened their positions at the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Africa Zone Group III event on Tuesday as they became the only teams to maintain their perfect start to the competition.

After both recording wins on Monday, Tunisia followed up with a 3-0 victory over Namibia to put themselves firmly at the top of Pool A, while Benin outlasted Ivory Coast 2-1 in a thrilling tie that sees them lead Pool B.

Tunisia, the host nation, eased past Namibia without the loss of a set and with all four players in the team getting time on court. Mohamed Abid and Malek Jaziri clinched the tie with singles wins, and Anis Ghorbel and Slim Hamza successfully teamed up in the doubles rubber.

In the other Pool A tie, Zimbabwe defeated Ghana 2-1 to keep their hopes alive of a runner-up finish in the round-robin stage. Zimbabwe and Naminia face each other on Wednesday with second place at stake.

Benin’s triumph over Ivory Coast came after nearly seven hours of play in the day’s three rubbers. Loic Didavi came from a set down to beat Aboubacar Sigue 36 60 61 and give Benin an early lead, but Valentin Sanon drew Ivory Coast level by overcoming Alexis Klegou 76(7) 26 61.

With everything to play for in the doubles, Didavi and Klegou held their nerve to clinch a memorable 67(5) 62 76(3) victory. Benin look favourites to continue their 100 per cent record on Wednesday when they face win-less Algeria in their last round-robin tie.

Algeria slumped to their second successive defeat on Tuesday, losing to Kenya 2-1. The second spot in Pool B is still up for grabs and looks likely to be decided by the tie between Ivory Coast and Kenya.

After Wednesday’s final Pool ties, the teams will have a day off on Thursday. The play-offs then take place on Friday with the winner of Pool A meeting the runner-up of Pool B, and vice versa. The two winning nations will be promoted.
