Marcel Felder of Uruguay and Roberto Cid of Dominican Republic will get the first round of Americas Group I underway at the Carrasco Lawn Tennis Club in Montevideo, Uruguay after Thursday’s draw pitched them together in the opening match.
Martin Cuevas, the Uruguay No.2, will then take on Dominican lynchpin Jose Hernandez in Friday’s second singles match before Felder joins forces with Ariel Behar for Saturday’s scheduled doubles match against the away team’s duo of Henry Estrella and Juan Berrido.
With the sides evenly matched on player rankings, the tie could come down to Sunday’s reverse singles, which will kick off with an intriguing battle of the No.1s when Felder takes on Hernandez in what could be a crucial rubber for both teams. Cuevas takes on Cid in the fifth rubber to wrap up the tie.
Uruguay and Dominican Republic are the only teams in competitive action this weekend in Americas Group I, since Chile, Ecuador and Colombia all have a bye into the second round and will not play until April 5-7. Chile will then travel to Ecuador to compete for a place in the World Group play-offs (held 13-15 September and 18-20 October 2013). Columbia, meanwhile, awaits the winner of this weekend’s tie between Uruguay and Dominican Republic.
